Tips to help you socialise safely

Before heading out to your local beer garden or favourite restaurant, here are some top tips to protect you, your friends, family and those working in hospitality from Covid.

Thank you if you have received a dose of the vaccine. Please remember to follow the below guidance, even if you have received both doses, as you could still spread Covid to others.

Plan ahead:

  • Download the NHS COVID-19 app.
  • Check if the hospitality venue is takeaway or collection only.
  • Pre-book tickets, a time slot or table online, on apps or over the telephone.
  • Have a plan B in case of overcrowding.
  • Check facilities including toilets and car parks are open.
  • Minimise travel where possible.
  • Use a direct route where possible.
  • On the way to or from the venue, avoid car sharing with anyone from outside your household or support bubble, unless for an exempt reason.
  • Follow guidance on how to travel on public transport safely.
  • Have a plan B in case of overcrowding.
  • Self-test. Order a free self-test kit.
  • Make sure to pack:
    - A mask/face covering
    - Tickets, contactless payment card or pass
    - Hand sanitiser
    - Essential medicines
    - Tissues

Do not visit hospitality venues if you:

  • Have Covid symptoms. You should get a test and follow the stay at home guidance.
  • Have been told by the NHS Test and Trace service to self-isolate.
  • Are self-isolating as a result of Covid symptoms or are sharing a household or support bubble with somebody with symptoms.

At hospitality venues:

  • Check in using the NHS COVID-19 app where you see official NHS COVID-19 QR code posters.
  • If soap and water aren’t available, use hand sanitiser (containing at least 60% alcohol).
  • Wear a mask, unless exempt, indoors and when walking through a venue to an outside area or toilets.
  • Order, eat and drink while seated (‘table service’).
  • Only mix in groups of 6 or with 2 households. Stay within your group.
  • Keep 2m from others wherever possible. Especially when queuing.
  • Pay by contactless, if possible.
  • Order via app if promoted.
  • Minimise close contact with other people, where possible.
  • Avoid loud talking, shouting or singing.
  • Be patient and follow the venue’s guidance.
  • Only touch surfaces where required. Do not lean on counters.
  • Treat hospitality staff with respect.
